MovieNewz: Did you Know?

*Same Concept, Different director.
In my last Movienewz article, I discussed the latest on the Rise of the Apes sequel, with the possibility of it being scrapped due to the previous director Rupert Wyatt confirming doubts over his return. It is fair to say, and quite unfortunate, Mr Wyatt is no longer part of "Dawn Of the Apes", rather the intervention of Director Matt Reeves.

Matt Reeves: You May know

Scheduled for May 2013, the folks behind the scenes remain tight-lipped for obvious reasons but touch on a direct continuation from where Caesar (Serkis) left off. The intelligence of Caesar will remain a huge factor, with Empire revealing a further take-over, resulting in the creation of devious apes we know too well.

*New "Bullet to the head trailer".
Sylvestor Stallone's upcoming ear-blaster "Bullet to the head" is well and truely viral, even more so with the second trailer released yesterday.

-"You don't just kill a guy like that!"...Stallone - "I just did!"

What can we expect? Well for those who don't know the story, it follows a New Orleans cop (Sung Kang) teaming up with a reputated hitman (Sylvester Stallone). Why? well, in typical nostalgic 80's fashion why not take down a vicious crime boss slash Henchman, Morel (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), who in my opinion has quite an onscreen presence. On a slightly amusing note: Christian Slater is also part of the crew. Remember him?

                                                            Trailer: Bullet to the head

*Too late Comic geeks, "Man Of Steel" will be darkly realistic, like we hoped!
Words we will thankfully embrace from screen writer David S.Goyer; "What Christopher Nolan and I have done with Superman is try to bring the same naturalistic approach that we adopted for the Batman trilogy. We always had a naturalistic approach, we want our stories to be rooted in reality".

We would be lying if we felt the teaser trailer gave off any different. Don't be fooled, Chris Nolan has not got a huge part behind the scenes, but the realistic, human-like concept of Superman will definitely carry a slight ingredient from Mr Nolan.

Directed By Zack Snyder, the film will look to resurrect the return of Superman in better fashion than it's predecessor, adding a super-hero's origin to a concept that could almost feel believable.

Movie Newz: Hitchcock, Apes sequel and the box office!

A Hitchcock Resurrection
A glimpse of the first image and possible poster of Anthony Hopkins in the upcoming Hitchcock film (right).

For those who don't know, the anticipated movie will not be a life-biopic. The film will follow the events leading up to the making of Psycho and the controversies surrounding its development. Supporting a cast to die for, Helen Mirren who plays the wife of Alfred is one of a fine cast set to represent the haunting production that was filmed in 1959.

Exciting times for the Horror genre
On the brink of Halloween, Sinister (right) looks to be the scariest movie of 2012. The last time a movie truly frightened me was Insidious. I can not wait for this to drop, hopefully near-around Halloween. Horror fans will love what has been seen so far.

Turn out the lights and see the latest trailer here http://movies.yahoo.com/video/ymoviesredband-29056098/sinister-red-band-trailer-30632200.html

Box office
The US box office remains tight as Jake Jake Gyllenhaal's End Of Watch and spooky thriller House At The End Of The Street continue to tie on 13 million. As Ireland await the drop of cop drama End of watch, I can judge House at the End as a pretty mediocre movie. The fact that the US audience are blowing their money on such a film is laughable. Running third is Trouble With The Curve starring  Clint Eastwood; A baseball flick, which means any concept focusing on baseball is meant for the United States only, and maybe Canada. In some other hilarious box office news,  Resident Evil: Retribution thankfully free-falled to 5th position with 6.7 million. Apparently it held top for a short while. So while Resident rubbish and a re-release of Nemo (3D) at 4th, Dredd hardly managed to grab the attention of cinema goers as it gets comfortable with 6.3 million, staying in 6th position. WHAT? Have the US bothered to see Dredd? no! It rocked. Something tells me it is the same minority of people that Adam Sandler and Co target for cash. People open your mind, but at the same time don't be so gullible. After all, you did just see Resident Evil: Retri-who gives a shit!

Scary Movie 5. Obviously
The first screen shot for the next mundane piece of childish comedy. What was once a genius concept that brought a whole new ingredient to the words "spoof comedy", it's fair to say the more they were released, the absolute worst they became. With news that the Wayans brothers have abandoned ship, the release which is set for 2013 will throw more stupidity at us with the credentials of two idiotic and slightly irrelevant actors, Charlie Sheen (again) and Lindsay Lohan (right). I might end up eating my words, but until a teaser drops?, I will hold my pessimistic position.

Texas Chainsaw 3D trailer
So another year and yet another writer struggled to pen something original. Michael Bay or someone related to him - "Hey, I know, let us combine something different. What are the two components in today's filming the fans hate? 3D and Horror remakes, so lets combine both and make some lazy money". Well, congrats to those guys. Watch the latest massacre of what was once a cult classic. (below).

Apes sequel in Jeopardy?
According to Total Film, Rupert Wyatt, who directed Rise of the Apes is planning on calling time on his proposed sequel. What was written to continue on from the previous, Wyatt is struggling to abide by the apparent release date which was set for May 23rd 2014. I know, like a year and a half of preparation. Who knows. Hopefully this can be resolved quickly, as judging from the success of Rise of the apes, it would be fantastic to keep Rupert's imagination.

Universally obvious
Universal studios has failed to let the dust settle among this years release of Ted and The Bourne Legacy by revealing a sequel for both movies. Doing what most productions do which is to take a look at the income from both, showing 400Million from Ted alone. For obvious reasons, Bourne failed to live up to the hype. Although they still wish to continue the story of Jeremy's character as they hope to open up a whole new world to the Bourne franchise.

A trailer worth mentioning.

Cloud Atlas is a six minute preview of what looks an extraordinary mess that I wish someone could explain to me. With a fine cast such as Tom Hanks, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Halle Berry and many more, they are supporting a concept that seems to collaborate with the past, present and future. It reminds me of the release of Avatar; which went viral and caused insane reactions in terms of the visual, original concept from James Cameron. Cloud Atlas looks to be heading in that direction. This could all be over rated, which is a disease I believe caught up with Avatar in the end! Although one can not ignore the visual mind-fuck of what the trailer has to offer. Cloud Atlas is due for release in October.

The Imposter

The Imposter is a dark and twisted tale that follows the heartbreaking events of a Texas family who describe their path of betrayal in what was supposed to be the homecoming of their 16 year old son.

Narrated by the perpetrator himself, Frédéric Bourdin invites you to follow his devious yet genius plan to disguise his personality. Frederic claims to be 16 year old teenager Nicholas Barclay who despite disappearing 3 years prior, has now turned up in Spain. With very little known of Frederic Bourdin, the french national labels himself a humble guy who was brought up in unfortunate circumstances. He tries convincing the audience to see a positive motive behind was to become a media sensation.

The concept follows an element of two sides consisting of reenactments from Frederic's trail, to actual footage of his time with his new family. On the other hand, the movie focuses on the bereavement and public outcry as members of the family, including the sister of Nicholas, Carey Gibson.  Carey continuously reveals how foolishly tricked she was, as well as numerous relatives being suckered into believing Frederic is 16 year old Nicholas.

Frederic Bourdin's position on the streets had to be convincing, selling the Texas based family a story that might not convince your average Joe, but certainly worked due to an in depth fictional mindset. Frederic sells Carey a 3 year biography of torture and abuse, his pupils being discoloured to prevent him being recognised is just one of many sickening lies from Frederic.

What is originally a straight forward and a surprisingly achievable lie, it is when the story of the boy's return goes viral, inviting people that Frederic and the family did not want. This leads to a nail biting twist and some serious consequences for both Frederic and the Texan family.

Director Bart Layton provided all the ingredients in making a well shot, factual based documentary that unfolds the origin of a qualified fabricator and blending it with a tragic tale of a young boys life. Although the characters involved are highly relevant, one can not help in thinking Bart Layton could have gathered more individuals to explain what is still a mysterious story. Instead, we are left listening to Carey Gibson and the mother who come across annoyingly gullible. In fact they are stupidly fooled into believing they are reunited with Nicholas who, as we can clearly see is not the boy he was 3 years ago. Still, the story is extremely interesting and highly memorable for the narration of Frederic Bourdin who reveals the "in your face" presence that is felt through-out the film as well as the screen your sitting in.

The Imposter is deluding and some what a disgusting portrayal of a con artist that would be forever recognised for misleading an oblivious family awaiting the return of their son, Nicholas Barclay.

Overall; For the lack of documentaries in cinemas, this one, like many, is worth a watch. If you can see past the idiotic family, you will find the Imposter is both enjoyable and very frightening.

Van Persie's crying departure

Robin Van Persie, signed by Wenger in 2004 was just a mundane transfer in the clubs history. Back when he kicked ball for Feyenoord, he was hot property taking into account the KNVB award he picked at just 17. That award stood for "best young talent". It was a significant mark before an exciting future as he put pen to paper to sign his first professional contract to stamp a three and a half year move to his home-land club. He went on to score a hand full of goals before a fall out within the Feyenoord camp. Both he and manager, Bert Van Merwijk, failed to see eye-to-eye leading to numerous statements from Merwijk claiming Van Persie's attitude to be uncontrollable and something that he refuses to deal with. A demotion thrown at Van Persie resulted to him playing with the reserves as well as a tense climax that saw him sent home from the 2002 champions League qualifier against Real Madrid. Now I am sure there is more than meets the eye particularly a hidden agenda behind the transfer that seen Robin so eagerly depart to Arsenal. It was an easy motive to leave his first professional club considering he spent most of 2003-04 season on the bench.

Note: SBV Excelsior is the youth club Robin Joined at the age of 14. After less than a year in their presence, a fall out between manager, and a rough relationship with his mother lead to the eventual departure resulting in his transfer to Feyenoord.

Now, while it would seem quite pathetic to pick on a such a talent at a young age in terms of personal behaviour, his past experience with clubs and the managers that run them seem quite appropriate taking into account the statement Van Persie left to Arsenal fans across the globe on Wednesday the 4th.

Out of my huge respect for Mr. Wenger, the players and the fans I don’t want to go into any details, but unfortunately in this meeting it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal FC should move forward. “I’ve thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract. You guys, the fans, have of course the right to disagree with my view and decision and I will always respect your opinions.”

Well what a surprise! No really, what a surprise! He was approaching nine years at Arsenal, a club that in a way stuck with what can only be described as a crash dummy with numerous faults! Through-out his career there is no doubt that when he played, he played well. His ability and overall presence could change a game in an instant. Did he have that gift when he was at Feyenoored? nope! Obviously players change and grow over the years, but to be quite frank, no club could have developed Robin the same way Arsenal have done. As time went by, so did his career. Arsene Wenger, a father figure to most players at the club (Apparently), showed time and time again his patience with such a talent. There is no doubt that Wenger went to sleep at night considering a transfer for Van Persie, particularly over the past 3 years at least. But yet Robin should consider himself lucky due to the severe stubbornness of Mr Wenger.

The Million dollar question: Can we challenge for the league title when this eventual transfer does proceed? YES! Any fool could say no, particularly myself as I can be quite pessimistic when it comes to Wenger's philosophy. But in terms of who, why and how we have lost key players over the years, particularly in the most recent transfer windows, our third place finish is an acceptable achievement!

Okay, I hear you, "But...but, Van persie scored all the goals for us? we would be lost without him!"
True, but an obvious fact taken into account the oblivious presence of strikers such as Marouane Chamakh, Bendtner, Park, Vela and Joel Campbell! I am not believing for a second that Van Persie alone dragged us to third. Like many, Arsenal is a football team! Team being the key word. The squad in no doubt supplied Robin with the goals that shed some light back onto a player who has not been there for Arsenal in the past.

Ground-hog day? Remember Bill Murray's character? well, he is the equivalent to each and every Arsenal fan that has had to witness the same owl bull every season! It seems simple routine for us to hand away our best talent every time a player gets impatient...or greedy! Samir Nasri, Kolo Toure, Adebayor, Gael Clichy and Cesc Fabregas! Thierry's departure was the right time. As for Alexander Hleb, well you know you messed up mate.

My last paragraph reeks of the colour blue! "MONEY MONEY MONEY" (Abba is the band on each and every players Dre Beats at the Etihad Stadium). The scary thing is not necessarily the departure of Van Persie, it is to who he will join. It will hurt to see him join City. The power at that club speaks for itself. Already you have little deceiving "Rats" like Toure calling out for Robin to join the money train. It is highly understandable when a player wants to win things, respect. But when a player like Van Persie gives his best and longest run of games in one season decides he has had enough? I find that unacceptable. Why? well his glass body has shown proof over the years leading to lack of consistency and overall appearance. I believe in my heart that he owes Arsenal (more to Arsene) the rest of his playing days and I speak for the rest of the "Gunners" that if he proved man enough to sign for another three seasons with the club, with numerous signings by his side, we, and him would achieve at least two trophies come season 2012/13 (the League title and maybe Carling).

What is that you say? he still has a season left? not good enough! Plus I would rather bring Nickolas Bendtner back than let Robin go on a free! (Honestly). If that is the sacrifice we make as a football club, so be it. I just pray to god that if Robin does not come to his senses and pushes further for oblivion, Wenger must, for the first time in a long time have a valuable replacement!

Where do we go from here? We get this saga over and done with. Arsenal fans have grown tired of these transfer dramas being dragged so far "beyond the thunder-dome" that it affects our start to the new season. Van Persie's statement last Wednesday could not have been more blunt and severe in terms of the judgement of both manager and owners! (fucking yanks). Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski is a step in the right direction...well about one step to be frank! Podolski's club rep is not convincing and his recent spat in the European Championship did him no favours. Oliver Giroud is french so kind of sums up Wenger's motive behind that signing! As I type I am suffering with sever flashbacks in relation to our last signing from the french league! Let's just say I hold high-hopes for Giroud. He is tall and strong with possibly a better chance at heading the ball than both Chamakh and Bendtner! (Both were signed for heading ability correct?). Third time lucky please god...

“I love the club and the fans, no matter what happens. I have grown up and became a man during my time with Arsenal FC,” Robin van Persie added. “Everybody at the club and the fans have always supported me over the years and I have always given my all (and more) on and off the pitch. I am very proud of being part of this fantastic club for the last eight years.

It is awfully frustrating to see Wenger purchase two strikers (Podolski on the wing also) since the season climaxed. Of course we argue till the dogs come home about Wengers lack of signings but the most recent activity from the manager seems an element of De-Ja-Vu in terms of mediocre players. I mean does Arsene believe what he has brought in so far to be an immediate replacement for the Van? or better yet a solution to convincing Robin to stay by yelling "Look at me Robin, I am buying players...now will you stay?"

Unfortunately we all know that is not the way it works. It seems just like the previous gifted players to depart, it is one year too late for Wenger to keep last seasons top scorer. I mean come on, no disrespect to Lukas and Giroud, but could Arsene not show some courage and actually bid for a striker that every club craves? Surely that means the striker has talent am I right? I mean if Barcelona, City, Man United etc are chasing a player, surely you also want that same guy because clearly these players are born and bread trophy winners! So bid and see what happens. If that same player chooses to join elsewhere fine. At least Arsenal can say to the fans look? we tried...

We all know the truth is really in the french pudding! Arsene is not only stubborn with the clubs income, but afraid to compete with clubs over players that actually make a team, not break one! Sure, the folks behind the club can babble on about how they are still reforming a project in relation to the youth coming through the clubs ranks etc, but the average fan needs an opinion also. Not saying that concept has not worked in the past...that is the past! The future is now. Plus if we do give birth to someone fresh he will be snatched up two years down the line if the club do not get their act together. That there is the harsh truth about the youth Arsenal produce or the rookies we buy. We form them and then sell them. Again that is me being extremely pessimistic. Do you blame me?

The five year trophy drought (Six if the window is dry) is the obvious scent that is driving potential players away from the club!

Solution? Text Van Persie now and ask him to sleep on it! Same answer as before Robin? Fine. We need to sell him and do it quick! The two recent signings are not the calibre we need to combine a force to be reckoned with next season! I mean that is what we want right? "Lean, mean grilling machines"! Men not kids! The manager needs to sit down with a glass of the finest french red wine (the blood of Nasri) and consider the ambition within the players and the club itself. Who wants to be there? Who loves the club and who likes the club? Obviously there are others beneath the rubble looking for an escape route or perhaps those who are simply not good enough to play for Arsenal.

We need a mixture of talent combined into one strong element! Success is the key next season, with or without Van Persie. A departure that is by-far not finalised but indeed seems the likely result for Robin. I wish him all the best with the rest of his career, wherever he goes for he has been fantastic in Arsenals most desperate of times. For all he has done, there will always be a level of despise from the fans towards him for all he done and the more he could have done...

L.A rapper Game and City Lads, The Original Rudeboys tear up the Olympia theatre

The Game returned to Dublin City's Olympia theatre last night along with rising stars,The Original Rudeboys.

It was 3 years since L.A rapper and former G.unit member The Game was last seen on Irish soil. In 2008 he played the Olympia theatre in front of a sold out crowd. Unfortunately, me being a big Game fan,I missed that one. I did catch him a year or two prior at the Ambassador theatre, once again at the heart of Dublin City and I can honestly say it was, at the time, one of the best rap gigs I have ever attended.

I was fortunate to attend the gig at the Olympia theatre with a cracking box seat ticket (ringside I suppose). Dublin City lads Sean Arkins, Robert Burch and Sean Walsh led the way, supporting The Game as the up and coming accoustic/hiphop group, The Original Rudeboys. The band, which brings a mixture of Irish rap from Sean Arkins, acoustic guitar and vocals supplied by Robert Burch as well as Sean Walsh, who gives off a nice touch with his precious ukulele. The local group from the heart of town aren't shy of crowds at this stage, after playing numerous venues and festivals such as Reading in England and supporting G.unit at the Waterford festival. Songs such as "Live your Life", "Crazy" which is their own unique version to Cee lo Green's Crazy, and "Stars in my Eyes",their first release and a Youtube sensation, all went down well with, what looked like a sold out Gig!
The three townies looked more comfortable than ever on stage filling which what could only be described as big boots as the Main act, The Game was yet to follow. It was clear people from all over turned up to lend support to Ireland's next generation of superstars with The Original Rudeboys having none other than a bright future ahead of them.

The Game appeared on stage around 9.20 pm after an eager wait from the crowd. I must admit I could see myself as well as others were starting to lose patience! He eventually arrived...late, as these rappers tend to do but in the end it was all worth it. "The City" was the Introduction song which is the first on his most recent album, "Red". He was dressed in what I can only describe as "on the way to the Gym clothes", but someone of his swagger pulled it off, easily. The Red album is his fourth studio release so he played through songs such as "Goblins vs Martians" which features Lil Wayne and Tyler the creator, and "Ricky", a hardcore rap song which features a well put together mix from the classic movie "Boyz in the hood".

He went on to keep it old school as he played some of his most successful songs like "Dreams", "No more fun and games" and "Higher", all taken from his first album The Documentary. I can't help but get into the events surrounding his performance. At one stage he called up all the people in the crowd wearing Red and let them all bounce around the stage with him. Another dude in the crowd got specifically called upon after The Game had noticed the amount of tattoos the young guy had, leaving him and Game on stage comparing tattoos as well as getting the chance to rap with Game on one of his songs which looked quiet an experience for the teenage fan. His Entourage clearly loves Irish women as every so often they would just randomly call girls up to dance on stage.

The Game mixed it up with songs from his previous albums "The Doctors Advocate" and "LAX".
"My Life", also featuring Lil Wayne, and the banging "One Blood" almost blew the roof off the Olympia!

He threw in the occasional I love Ireland and it's the best place he ever performed at jazz. The thing about the Game it seems he really is a genuine guy and does show genuine love to the crowd and really knows how to put on a show. Since The Game started performing in Ireland over the success of his career, never has he been judged badly on performance. He brought nothing less than a fantastic performance as well as the entourage he had on stage with him who cared to join in on the chaos! The Game had this little apprentice with him the name avoids me now but at one stage near the end he climbed his way up to the first balcony before leaving the crowd anticipating weather he is going to jump or not. The security in the Olympia theatre did try and prevent him until the Game demanded they let him jump! He shouted "Let him go, I don't think ya'l know who run shit here. If you don't let him jump nobody here is going home" he eventually jumped feet first (with Air Jordans might I add).

"Pot of Gold" featuring Chris Brown was the last song he played. He dedicated it to anyone who is searching for that dream and to not give up until you have found it. The crowd did demand one more song and so Game played "Pot of Gold" again!

The night was full of entertainment and I really enjoyed the gig as I am sure most did.. The Game and The Original Rudeboys put on the performance expected of them.

Show your support this Friday 25th as The Original Rude Boys launch their first single "Stars in my Eyes"on physical CD. They will be in Tower Records off Grafton Street meeting fans and signing copies of the single. The CD will contain three versions of the song.
