Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Genre: Action/Adventure
Directed: Anthony Russo and Joe Russo
Starring: Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel Jackson & Robert Redford
Running: 136 minutes

Man vs Movie has reported on the Marvel allegiance takeover in dull fashion over the years. Frankly, I am sick to death of it. The success of Iron Man (2008) and Avengers: Assemble in (2012) is well deserved. However Disney have all but forced us to eat a particular dinner that looked delicious in the oven but turned out to be too cold, mushy and tasteless i.e. the boring tale of Thor and The Dark World (2013), Ironman 2 (2010) followed by the divided opinion of Ironman 3 last year. Man vs. Movie can officially confirm that Ironman 3 was pure garbage! We could ramble on about Spiderman but that's for another day. The latest from Marvel studio is yet another sequel that tries to prove to superhero fans that the spawn of the Avengers success was not a once off enjoyment. As you may have already guessed, I did not like Captain America: The First Avenger (2011). I questioned myself but I would be lying if I told you there were sleepless nights. I came to the conclusion that maybe I just don't like Captain Steve Rogers as a whole? Well, since the release of winter soldier, Marvel fans (and me) have united to celebrate what is one of the most surprising movies of 2014 (so far) and the best marvel movie since the Avengers? (Yes that is a question).

Captain Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is now celebrated as the hero and ageless World War II veteran Captain America who is fitted to a new suit and assigned to American duty; protect, serve and like the fantastic opening scene on heavy waters, infiltrate. Captain America and SHIELD’s recruitment set the ass-kicking tone from the off as Captain America takes out armed guards on a SHIELD vessel occupied by an Algerian mercenary. The fight choreography is rough and tense as we watch what looks like an upgraded Captain flinging his deadly shield beyond all corners of the vessel.  SHIELD companion Natasha aka Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) is on her own mission of intelligence, one that leaves the Captain questioning the initial orders of Nick Fury (Samuel Jackson). It is only after the mission that the Captain is briefed by Fury as the patched dictator reveals Project Insight; three hellicarriers designed to park in the sky limit in order to eliminate any potential threat to the United States. Seeing this as a way of spreading an epidemic of fear rather than protection, Captain America's once proud perspective of the United States government is no longer. Steve Rogers struggles to adapt to modern society outside the suit. However Captain America is forced to put his politics to one side when Nick Fury is attacked by unknown assailants with the name “Winter Soldier “being linked to a potential destruction of SHIELD.

Captain American and Black Widow seek to retain intelligence data that could reveal far more loose ends than they could have ever imagined. Creative villain Winter Soldier is the poison to Captain America's chalice making this sequel far more interesting in terms of depth; a story of relevance yet a backdrop of history and some much needed character development. The fantastic action scenes are just one reason this sequel pulls you in. Each character has their moment.  That "about time" moment happens for Nick Fury who gave us nothing but jibe talking jibber jabber in Marvel's “phase one” chapter.  However this time around Nick Fury advertises the very reason he is leading a bunch of kickass heroes into battle because he too can bolster some action. The lustful Black Widow is entertainingly witty and dangerous in her brutality once again, while new companion Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) aka Falcon is a humorous character of much likeness and excitement regarding the expansion of his story.

If a movie is going to be over two hours long the director would want to make sure it is well balanced. In this case, the action does outweigh the drama, and so it should; we want action, and we want it now. But, those looking for an all-out deconstruction of a country will want to stick to Man of Steel or Transformers because the portion of drama and dialog are added in what becomes a necessary environment of morals and human decisions based on terrorist acts, intelligence and the very existence of war. I think that is where winter soldier is receiving the majority of praise. It does carry relevance and depth followed by some well-choreographed scenes of brutality; an elevator brawl, a highway chase and a memorable showdown full of twists and turns. Reflecting back to my above sentence, this Marvel tale has everything involved to keep you interested.

Directors Joe and Anthony Russo go into much detail regarding the story's backdrop. The inheritance of the old “factual history” trick has worked really well on this occasion and fortunately suits the origins of Captain America and the villainous antagonist. Previous director Joe Johnston did something similar in its Nazi-mystic element featuring the red skull but it was two hours too long. The action became boring and the story was careless, while we never truly rooted for Steve Rogers and his transformation. The Winter Soldier does well in building on an already existing chapter and overdeveloping the story of “what was” in its brief flashbacks of the first movie. So in a way this sequel has the first movie to thank in regards to the diagnoses of each character, developing Chris Evans into a Captain America we engage with and ultimately root for – something that proved hard to do in its predecessor. It brings satisfaction in relation to the extent of where Captain America, as a comic-book superhero is going and will inevitably become.

We will see a third movie but not before a much anticipated Avengers sequel. Then we will see a return of the hammer wielding Thor and maybe a Mark Ruffalo Hulk revamp. By the time a third movie comes out fans would have made up their mind on where the hell Marvel is going to take all of this. Nevertheless, The Winter Soldier has done what Thor and Ironman failed to do – create an exciting level of anticipation regarding a trilogy.

The Amazing Spiderman 2: Second Trailer

Excuse the language but holy shit have you seen the latest Spiderman trailer? Following the Electro advertised teaser we all saw a few months back, the official trailer is here and my god it makes me think why I would ever wish Marvel to go on holiday for a while...okay The Avengers was something special); as was The Amazing Spiderman (2012).

I am going to go out on a limb here and say, and while it is still early days, this might be the best Marvel superhero blockbuster since The Avengers (2012).

Jackman's Wolverine 2013

"I always thought of him as being lean, animalistic, not necessarily pretty. He has all this berserkery, and he's terrifying when he loses all reason in blind rage."

Those are the thoughts from Hugh Jackman on his vision of the X-Men icon. Empire got hold of the first image from the Wolverine re-boot yesterday. It is a re-boot ain't it? if not it should be. If Jackman's comments above mean anything, he will demand an R-rated premise to the movie with a more dramatic ingredient. After all, he does grow blades from his fists in blind rage!

The image reveals a quality tone to both the overall graphic and the expression of seriousness from Mr Jackman.

Dredd

"You have been judged. The sentence, is death."

We have come a long way since Stallone's Judge Dredd in 1995. He was considered as the only option, a good one, at that particular time. The only problem with the result of that movie was the lack of relation towards the comics, referencing nothing other than a PG take on what was considered a production that obeyed the rules of Sly Stallone.

Thankfully the resurrection of Dredd begins at the hands of director (Pete Travis) who not only revives the character, but sticks to the 3000 AD concept that the comics portrayed so beautifully.

The storyline is a simple gritty concept showing the aftermath of a once an inhabitable city, is now run by both law and lawless. The authority that over looks the dead city strings into the hands of judges; a law with no boundaries as the lack of remorse is witnessed using a one man Jury, or a sentence of execution if necessary. As we all know, Dredd (Karl Urban) is one who darkens the days of the drug underworld, patrolling the futuristic ruin of a city he portrays it as.

With routine call-outs, it is no ordinary day as Dredd is introduced to Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) a rookie cop assigned to Dredd to carry along side his line of work as he tends to play witness to her dedication by throwing her into the deep end, the worst end...

Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) is the feeder, a wanna-be dictator who overlooks the city from just one of many towers. A scarred and demented human being, Ma-ma controls the residents of her block, a location considered a no-go for the authorities. It is when two bodies are found at the area that Dredd sees this a fortunate day for Anderson as she makes the decision for both to investigate. The decision results in a grim battle against the worst drug mules in the city as the parasites of Ma-ma's block seek to protect an operation, leading to a war greater than Dredd could of expected.

The movie provides a small cast that help deliver a fantastic piece of entertainment. Its comparison to "The Raid" is quite appropriate as it does indeed take place in one building, but trading the martial arts for some straight up gun-slinging proved a delightful result. Not expecting to be wowed by much, Karl Urban's Dredd supplied an element of a dark soul-less body with an over usage of cheesy one-liners topped off with endless violence. The overall character of Dredd was a joy to witness. From the off you anticipate, just like the raid, the closer he gets to the finish-line, the higher you grin!. I watched with glee as Dredd tore through bodies with clever yet hilarious weaponry.

The sequences were beautiful to watch as Karl Urban's slow motion concept is highly original introducing it to the scenes when it really mattered.

Fans of the Judge Dredd franchise (can't say I was) would be pleased with this re-hash and more importantly the revamping of the character itself. The writers smartly chose to keep on the helmet as it is a brave move that goes unnoticed because of the jaw-line and personality portrayed on screen. Sticking to apparent comic book logic, this is something I believe the fans and audience wanted to see.

Those seeking a fine storyline full of drama and sensibility may keep their torso in one place. This isn't a taste for everyone. I believe anyone who chooses to see this flick to purposely slate it should not bother. Leave that brain you hide with your skull at home and enjoy it for what it is. If so, you will remember how ridiculously hilarious Dredd truly was, and supposed to be. I find I am opening my mind with these kind of flicks. In order to truly see it for what it is, you have to.

Overall; a fantastic welcoming for a character that was almost forbidden a return to our screens. Karl Urban's Dredd is guaranteed to make you laugh while you hide the shocking face of what you had just witnessed. Strictly 18's! YEEEAH!

The Amazing Spider-man Review 2012

"What? a Spider-man re-boot?...but but..."

Yes folks, even after its release the majority of fans in terms of Spider-man and movies in general still cannot believe their eyes! 10 years since Sam Raimi created the big screen synopsis of Peter Parker/Spider man, Marc Webb takes a crack of the whip. (Webb? how convenient)

Webb, who brought us a delightful flick in 500 Days of summer back in 2009, opens up a new path in the spider-man saga. Not necessarily a new concept in terms of Peter Parker's origin, but an attractive cast and the possibility of a breath-taking plot in relation to the mysterious disappearance of Peter's parents.

Peter (Andrew Garfield) is your typical quirky high-school lonesome who in some way seems geeky through the eyes of the students around him. His geeky character is a disguise for his genius knowledge in synthetic biology. We see previously the distraught and realism to come as we witness numerous flashbacks of the brief child-hood Peter shared with his parents. The next of kin in his eyes is now his uncle and best friend Ben...as in uncle Ben! (Martin Sheen) and Aunt May (Sally Field).

Gwen Stacey (Emma Stone) is the attractive sweet heart. An intern in Peter's school, her genuine personality and kind hearted likeness quickly lures Peter to her feet. Peter is obviously the underrated photographer and grows in time as we well know. He uses Gwen as an excuse to use his camera as we see his persona shine whenever she is present. There is huge difference in chemistry in terms of Parker's previous on-screen love Mary-Jane. There is no fight here, it is immediate love and proves a pleasure to endure romance at its realist.

As the path to Spider-man is played out (longer than expected might I add), a serious lack of information on his parents disappearance leads Peter on a hot trail which results in a convenient connection with Oscorp. The genetics empire is run by Dr Connors (Rhys Ifans), a one armed genius who is destined to change the way of the living world in terms of animal biology and other weird scientific nonsense to be blunt! It is not the knowledge of Connors that attracts Parker and the audience, it is the convenient relation between Peters father and Connors himself.

Then happens the birth we have all grown to know and love. Peter is curious to speak to Connors and gets himself into Oscorp along with a group of other folks absorbing the De-tour. Curiosity killed the cat they say, In Peters case it just got him bitten by a nasty spider resulting in eh'... SPIDER-MAN!

So a montage of sequences show us the freaky results of Peters incident, giving him some amazing abilities including the ability to scale walls, fine awareness (Spider-sense) and a beast in the owl fighting techniques. I never quite got that to be fair, how does this result him being a top-class fighter? anyway, that's the case. A new life awaits the soon to be "Friendly neighbour hoo ah forget it!

Sam Webb's Spider-man provides a new contrast but in small parts. Obviously the introduction to any Spider-man origin is the incident that creates the hero, but it is what follows that can make a significant difference in relation to Sam Raimi's take on the web-slinger. Spidey's villain is Dr Connors' eventual transformation, the Lizard. On all accounts, and honesty, I was not pushed on what was revealed in trailers in terms of the lizard concept. It turns out I was wrong, he looked quality and could possible be CGI at its best. A fine result of the gruelling abilities and vicious mind-set that is revealed when the Lizard prowls the streets and sewers. Rhys Ifans is a tremendous actor with a fine career. His inclusion was always going to mark a good result whether Webb's portrayal was a success or not.

The audience will enjoy the all-round cast but in fairness, Martin Sheen played a typical uncle Ben and Field's Aunt May could never fail. It was easy work supplied by qualified acting. I believe the controversy following this re-boot is the copy-cat sequences in terms of it's predecessor. By all means not by myself but the real critics of course! This review is not a comparison, more of a  recommendation to the fans of the franchise to see this re-boot.

Andrew Garfield is a perfect fit for the red and blue spandex, just like when Tobey Maguire was back in 2002. The difference? Not much, well, age and maybe the ability to bring some seriousness to the franchise. I know Spider-Man 3 (2007)  was not Tobey's fault but The Amazing Spider-man brings something new to the table in terms of darkness, drama and a much needed birth of new romance. The action scenes are quite brilliant also taking into account the 3D sequences that are unexpectedly fantastic and highly memorable. (Dam it, I kind of compared just there, didn't I?). The suit is beautiful and easy on the eye even though Webb pushed for a darker contrast. The web slinging and overall situations Spidey gets into makes this the best movie I have seen in 3D so far. (And I hate 3D!)

Bear in mind folks there are weaknesses to this re-boot. I am not talking "needle in a haystack" stuff I will leave that for the "Spidey fanatics". The plot is far from convincing. You are lead to believe Peter Parker's curiosity into his parents disappearance will lead to an exciting investigation and overall climax. As exciting and entertaining the two hours were, I felt let down as I was forced to settle for high expectations in terms of a sequel. (A recently released statement admitted a trilogy by the way). There is an explanation that awaits the audience, one that in my opinion should have been settled a lot sooner.

My advice on the Amazing Spider-man is see it at once and enjoy it for what it is. Although It has only been 10 years, embrace and admire the new era of Spidey that Mr Webb is attempting to throw at us. As repetitive as some scenes might be, and a minor let-down does not take away the fact that the Amazing Spider-man was hugely entertaining with a tremendous acting performance from both Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

Overall: A slightly fresh and enjoyable movie with a memorable performance from Garfield.

B-Day, 22 Days. Are you Ready?

We were teased before the new year with just under a minutes capture of what was to come in the trilogy, or the end perhaps? A sick commissioner Gordon, a washed up Bruce Wayne and a tired looking Alfred. Like poor Alfred had not already got his work cut out, he now has to deal with a multimillionaire who dresses up as a bat, more than once a year! Not forgetting a flash forward of who could cause the beginning of the end for the caped crusader, Bane! (yeah I used the term caped crusader...George Clooney flashback! Apologies)

Well, time went by, people lived their life and talked about how typically mean Christopher Nolan was to show such lack of activity upon the first trailer. Although lets not forget the term, Teaser? Yes, this is whats used to get Batman/movie fans going viral with their thoughts and opinions. (Vlogs...of course)

Anticipation is an extraordinary thing. It pays off when a second trailer is released, official. Two full minutes of Christopher Nolan's genius concept to be. The trailer shows us Bane, and the chaos to come. Hopefully Tom Hardy's Bane is as cold as he seems, although blowing up an entire football field isn't exactly a "sane" thing to do is it? . So Besides from the sneaky flick of Catwomen and washed up Bruce...again, the highlight of the release is the possible plot to the movie. Bane wants to end Gotham and its only hope for survival.

"When Gotham is in Ashes, then you will have my permission to die" Tom Hardy's Bane

So then there is the third and final piece to this ridiculous, yet acceptable build up to what could be the best super-hero movie ever. On that note, is it wrong to say super-hero? on the basis of it been Christopher Nolan's masterpiece? I mean lets face it, as much as Batman has a history of being the super-hero/caped crusader in the past, this trilogy seems far from a "Save the Day" novel.

There are numerous additions to this trailer. The intro shows Bane and his affiliates hijacking a plane, in mid-air! obviously! I can't help but flashback to the bank scene in the Dark Knight. We all remember the classic introduction to the Joker and what he was all about. A first taste of his tricks to come. Oh, and a grenade in the mouth! I would be guessing the hijacking of the plane might just be the intro to The Dark Knight rises. Why wouldn't it be? It will definitely work. Plus we would all be lying to ourselves if we say we are more excited to see the Batman than Tom Hardy's portrayal as Bane...?

"I will not bury you, iv buried enough members of the Wayne family" - Michael Cain's Alfred

So if the destruction of Bane was not enough to show in the previous trailer, this one will settle the mind, for a while anyway. We see two bridges in Gotham collapse, we see the football field again, which is still a cool scene. This trailer gains serious advantage in relation to others regarding specific characters in the movie. Catwomen for instance. Anne Hathaway? I'm not convinced. Not on the basis of her reputation as an actor, but Catwomen's overall presence and relevance to the movie is yet to convince me. Although the chemistry between Bruce and Cindy, of what we are shown anyway looks a brilliant blend. The dance scene in the trailer where Selina tells Bruce in the nicest way possible,

"Theres a storm coming Mr Wayne"...Cold and nostalgic in relation to "Batman Returns". Ps no matter the out-come of this movie, Michelle Pfeiffer will always be the true Catwomen.

"You dont owe these people anything" - Catwomen

The fact that Joseph Gordon-Levitt also joins the cast is anonymous. It was great to see his brief appearance and hopefully makes for a good character as I rate him highly as an actor. In fact, who is he supposed to be? I am guessing either a crazed Batman fan, a down in the dumps journalist, rookie cop perhaps? or, wait for it...ROBIN!!? (Please no)

So anyway the trailer shows more washed up Bruce Wayne. He seems exhausted, weak and bewildered. It seems this is were Bane takes advantage. But never worry, I am sure there is an eye-opening speech that Alfred has prepared for when master Bruce says "No more". There is an upgrade in Wayne technology of course. The bat-jet,...or plane or car. yes flying car. According to Batman, he tells Catwomen "It's not a car" (Horse throat). Batman? c'mon, it's a car, with wings. A pretty cool car that I cannot wait to explore with my beautiful ability to see. :)

That pretty much covers it until its release JULY 20. I will update my blog if necessary. Until then, good luck. Ps Below is an exclusive picture of Tom Hardy's Bane, without the suit! :)

Creative piece: Arkham City Prison

It is a vintage bridge that connects Gotham City to Arkham Asylum. The mental institution, which is famous for stationing Batman’s arch enemies’ is over crowding by the month. Legendary foes such as Two-face, an individual most remembered by Gotham civilians as Harvey Dent, The Joker and Mr Freeze. These regularly combine affiliations to help escape the Asylum which has seemed to become simple routine.

Gotham City government is due to announce the opening of Arkham prison at midnight. The purpose of the building is to remove particular villains from the asylum. Prison officials have made a statement claiming the advanced landscape will be more capable of keeping foes such as the Joker on a 24hour lockdown.

Another reason for Arkham prison is due to Batman’s lack of ambition lately. Batman turns 55 this Thursday, as the citizens of Gotham slowly realise their dependant on an ageing hero is looking far more slim.

Reality checked in when an apparent rise of 50% in robberies and kidnappings emerged last month. Law enforcement believes this is due to certain individuals such as Scare-crow and Bane who are yet to be captured by the Bat. Other reports suggest a wide variety of prostitution has emerged, labelling poison Ivy and Harley Quinn the key organisers behind the ordeal.
These are some of many reports through-out the city that Batman has no knowledge of Gotham city, for the first time in years, is worried.

Joe Biden of the Gotham Mail spoke to Batman at an action figure convention in Metropolis yesterday. When asked about the newly constructed prison he said “I think it is a fantastic call from the government. Arkham Asylum was never strong enough to hold in them maniacs! I strongly believe whether you are classed as mental or not, certain individuals need to be transported to that prison ASAP!” With the apparent advancement and right technology, it can prevent anyone from escaping”.

Batman’s comments come at an appropriate time as certain house hold names such as Commissioner Gordon plea for Batman to retire. Gordon told the Gotham mail last week “If Arkham prison goes ahead, it will give Batman the ideal opportunity to retire. We think there will be a serious lack of work when this facility proceeds. Any possible crimes afterwards will be minor, nothing we can’t handle ourselves.”

Arkham prison is connected to the Asylum. It is located behind the asylum and is separated by surrounding electric gates. It will be on constant lock-down particularly coming up to Halloween. Prisoners from the asylum will not be judged on insanity rather their history of violence. The Joker and two-face are the first two announced to enter the prison.

The Gotham public will be curious to see the out-come of the new project and what the future holds for Batman. Batman was far from happy when asked about retirement yesterday at the convention and told brave Joe Biden “Who are you to say I should consider such a thing? Yes I will be 55 and I admit I am not as fast or skilled as I once was but let me tell you this sir. I can still pack a roundhouse kick to your wimpy ass and if the Bat mobile manages to pass the NCT tomorrow morning, I will be back patrolling the streets of the city I was born to protect”.

When Joe Biden asked the dark Knight about Robins recent drug charge he replied “No Comment”.

All the staff at Gotham Mail would like to wish Batman a happy Birthday if we don’t see him Thursday!

The Avengers Review 2012

The Avengers finally assemble on the orders of Nick Fury!

There was no secret of the highly populated cast in the lead up to the Avengers, taking into account the hype since the release of Iron Man in 2008. The success of Iron man was followed by a sequel in 2010. Fans of the Super Hero franchise where greeted with the release of two more comic book movies, Thor and Captain America. The question was, could the Avengers succeed as a whole?

Nick Fury (Jackson) recruits Iron Man (Downey Jr), Thor (Hemsworth), and Captain America (Evans) as well as newcomer Mark Ruffalo as the HULK! The super group also consists of two newbies to the big screen, Black Widow is played Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye (The next Bourne?)

The world is under threat following the arrival of Loki, a citizen of Asgard, another Universe. (Thor 2011). Loki is the brother of Thor, although both would agree the distance between them is not exaggerated. It is Loki's attack on S.H.I.E.L.D that leads to a crucial decision by Nick Fury, leader of the affiliation. The desperate attempt involves regrouping something stronger than Loki and his army of Cohorts, The Avengers!

The movie has a nice feel to it with a brilliant intro of what's to come. Those who have not seen previous movies won't suffer too much but it does consist of some flashbacks regarding Captain America.

The storyline is put together smartly and manages to keep the balance in relation to the numerous egos on board. As Loki is the one at large it feels the story is based off of Thor but does well in blending all characters. As always, Robert Downey shows class as the arrogant, yet hilarious Tony Stark and the ever so cheesy Captain America (Evans). Fans will enjoy the rivalry between both Captain America and Iron man, as personalities quickly collide before they realise the moral of the story is team-work.

The return of Loki was a great choice as he made for a terrific bad-guy in Thor and the collision between family is still fun to watch. Although Loki seemed a handful in the release of Thor in 2010, Nick Fury and the Avengers get caught completely off guard with Loki and his mind boggling army!

The introduction of a third Bruce Banner is, unfortunately frustrating for some. But when the Hulk is transformed, nobody notices. Yes, a third. Mark Ruffalo plays the man with the temper. Following Eric Bana and Edward Norton (My favourite by the way), Mark Ruffalo as Dr Banner had a challenge on his hands. Is there information on why Edward Norton was not included instead? I believe if he was, performance on the bases of acting would have been better than Mark Ruffalo. But just like I said, in relation to the Avengers, fans just want to see the Hulk tear people, buildings and valuable things apart! and that is just what he does! My favourite was Bruce Banner...when he was green.
My knowledge in Marvel limits, but I wonder what fans made of Hawk-eye and Black Widow? Both characters, like the rest were highly entertaining. Jeremy Renner is leading an exciting future and Scarlett Johansson...well, just do what you do best!... Not forgetting Samuel Jackson, even though he has been forgettable in the past. He gives fans an enjoyable performance, curse free. Mr Jackson just needs to choose his movies carefully in my opinion. He has been in some woeful movies lately.

The action and CGI makes the Avengers what it is. In comparison to Captain America (Which I despised) and even the previous CGI Hulk, this blows them out of the water. You noticed I excluded Both the Iron Man and Thor movies, the Avengers is still early release and is yet to be decided, in my opinion.

The Avengers is up there with the greatest super hero movies ever made. Audience from generations will enjoy the Avengers. Whether you are unfortunate to see this movie in 3D or stay classy with 2D, one must see immediately!

The Exciting question for the future is, What is next to come? Well we know Iron Man 3 and a Thor sequel is in writing. Unfortunately Captain America also, and possibly a new Bruce Banner? who knows. In relation to an Avengers Sequel? now that's getting carried away!
